Neighborly Actions: Beware AND Take Care
A few more ways to defend and protect people targeted by ICE; a City Civics workshop for teens in East Providence; a defense of green space in Pawtucket.
Hi, everyone. Here are a few more things to do with and for our neighbors this week.
Monday-Friday, 8am-12pm, 6th District Court (1 Dorrance Plaza, Providence): There’s a continued need for a large, active presence outside this courthouse to document and defend against ICE kidnappings. You can just show up for part/all of this time, and/or…
Anytime this week: Sign and share this petition to call for remote hearings (which would keep people from being as exposed to ICE kidnappings).
If you’re a veteran: About Face: Veterans Against the War will welcome you if you’ve been an active duty member of the military (including the National Guard) and you want to counter the potential for military occupation of our cities in the Northeast, similar to what’s been tried in LA and DC and threatened in Chicago. According to the member I spoke with, one method they use is frank, onsite outreach, vet to vet, to occupying National Guard members. If this sounds like something you’d be up for, there’s an application form.
Tuesday, September 16, 5:30pm (press conference) and 6pm (Planning Commission meeting), 100 Freight St, Pawtucket (use 75 Sabin St entrance): Community efforts to delay the destruction of Morley Field, the only green space in the Woodlawn neighborhood, are ongoing. This is a good opportunity to join them by testifying before the Planning Commission, especially if you’re a Pawtucket Resident. This letter is a good source of talking points. You could also call or email Jason Pettinato (jpettinato@pawtucketri.gov, 401-728-0500), the listed contact for the Pawtucket Planning Commission, if you can’t attend but would like to weigh in.
Tuesday, September 16th, 5:30-7:30pm, Fuller Creative Learning Center (260 Dover Ave, East Providence): This 6-week workshop, starting Tuesday, is for East Providence high school students who want to rack up their Community Service hours while learning how to change their city for the better. I’m leading it! You might like it! Register here!
With love,
Kate
