Neighborly Actions for the Week Ahead
Block an anti-vaccination, anti-science nominee. Eat some pizza with fellow educators. Donate to people in ICE detention, and support queer and trans people seeking housing.
Hi, everyone. Here are some things to do with and for our neighbors, starting tomorrow.
TOMORROW (Monday, January 27), anytime during the day, remotely: Call Senator Whitehouse at his DC office—(202) 224-2921—and urge him to oppose the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Junior to the Department of Health and Human Services. You can tell the staffer who answers that…
Kennedy’s rejection of vaccinations frightens you, and has has already killed people in Samoa
There has been at least one measles case in Rhode Island, and measles can kill and disable unvaccinated children
You don’t trust Kennedy to make good, safe or informed decisions about public health and medicine
TOMORROW (Monday, January 7), 5pm, Pizza J (967 Westminster St, Providence): Eat some pizza and plan for change with the Providence Caucus of Rank and File Educators—members of the Providence Teacher’s Union who are fighting for better working conditions and centering racial justice. If this describes you or someone you know, stop by for a slice and a chat.
Anytime this week, remotely: While we prepare to defend people targeted by ICE, let’s also support those who are already in ICE detention. If you look at AMOR’s community fund for ICE detainees, you’ll see what even a small donation can cover—a phone call from prison, a meal on the way home... Making it monthly is even better, because, unfortunately, more people are likely to have these needs in the coming year.
Anytime this week, remotely: Both PrYSM and Youth Pride RI are raising funds to support queer and trans people seeking safer living conditions. Right now, the easiest way to donate is to their general donation pool. With Youth Pride you can include a note or email them, letting them know that you hope they’ll be able to use the money for this purpose. PrYSM also does other stuff that’s useful in this moment, so your donation will be well spent regardless.
With love,
Kate
