Neighborly Actions Moving Along
A little victory, a co-op alliance, a chance to yell at some schmucks, and the real story of Thanksgiving.
Hi all! HR 9495, which I asked you all to call your reps about last time, has failed in the house with the help of RI Reps Magaziner and Amo, but it could resurge (this was a vote to suspend the rules in order to pass it; the actual bill may come up again). If you called in about this, well done you! Make sure your rep knows that if it comes back, he needs to vote it down again.
We’re seeing a little uptick in stuff to do (which is good) so here are some more things to do with and for our neighbors (including our neighbors in, uh, Boston) over the next few days; expect another email after the weekend.
I also encourage you to check out the PVD Bike Collective’s weekly offerings, just on general principles.
Thursday, November 14, 6-8pm, White Electric Coffee (711 Westminster St, Providence): Interested in worker cooperatives and the policies and services that make them easier to operate? Want to see if this model could work for the business you dream of? The Rhode Island Worker Cooperative Alliance is launching this week. Snacks and non-alcholic drinks provided; space is mobility aid accessible.
Saturday, November 16, 11am, Charlesgate Park (a block east of the Kenmore T stop), BOSTON: Some hypercontrolling misogynist buffoons are marching in Boston this weekend! Would shouting them down be a good use of your rage? Perhaps with an airhorn? Police presence seems likely, so be prepared and wise.
Tuesday, November 19, 4:30-7pm, 545 Pawtucket Avenue, Pawtucket: AMOR is holding their “Real Story of Thanksgiving” event, a community commemoration of invasion and survival. If you are interested in getting to know AMOR’s work (supporting community members, working to shut down the Wyatt Detention Center, and more), members, and principles, this is a good event to attend; as an organization, they’re likely to need more hands in the coming months. There will be food, hands-on learning, bingo, and surprises! Onsite childcare provided (please reach out to me if you are interested in helping provide childcare). The space is wheelchair/mobility aid accessible and so is the bathroom. (Note that the POWR meeting is also on the evening of November 19, at 6pm.)
With love,
Kate
